How to Make a Bonsai Tree from a Branch

Step 1

Trim your bonsai tree as usual, placing the trimmings in a bowl of water as they fall. Keep only cuttings that are at least 3 leaf nodes long, or that have at least 3 sets of leaves. Roots will come from those leaf nodes, so it's important to make sure at least 2 nodes are in the ground.

Step 2

Remove leaves from under the two leaf nodes of the cutting. Simply pinch the branch lightly and slide your fingers down.

Take your cutting and cut the stem at about a 45 degree angle with a really clean cut. Make sure your scissors are clean before performing this step.

Step 4

Trim most of the leaves off the branch - leaving only a few. Repot the cuttings in separate pots the following spring. It is possible to repot them once they have rooted but the roots are very delicate and you will inevitably lose some.
